Runza Casserole Recipe

This hearty Runza Casserole is a delicious twist on the classic Czech dish. Layers of savory ground beef, cabbage, and onion are enveloped in buttery crescent roll dough, creating a comforting and satisfying meal.

Ingredients:

Ingredient Quantity
Refrigerated crescent rolls 2 packages
Ground beef 2 lbs
Butter 2 tablespoons
Green cabbage, shredded 4 cups
Yellow onion, finely chopped 1 large
Mozzarella cheese, grated 1 1/2 cups
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper To taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Oven and Ingredients:

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Finely chop the onion and shred the green cabbage.
  2. Cook the Filling:

    • Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess grease.
    • Add butter, onion, and cabbage to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are tender and the onion is translucent.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Assemble the Casserole:

    • Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
    • Unroll one package of crescent rolls and press into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
    • Spread the ground beef mixture over the crescent roll layer.
    • Top with grated mozzarella cheese.
    • Unroll the second package of crescent rolls and place it over the cheese, sealing the edges.
  4. Bake the Casserole:

    • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the crescent rolls are golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  5. Serve:

    • Let the casserole cool slightly before cutting and serving. Enjoy hot!
