In a 2016 AARP interview, Helen Mirren reflected on meeting her husband, Taylor Hackford, saying, “I was 38 when I met Taylor, pretty late in life.” Their first encounter wasn’t exactly romantic—Hackford had kept her waiting for an audition. But after she landed the role, they got to know each other, and their relationship blossomed.
Their bond was strengthened by shared working-class roots. Mirren’s father, a Russian aristocrat who fled to the UK during the Russian Revolution, worked as a cab driver to support his family. Her mother came from a long line of butchers.
With their mutual passion for storytelling and love of travel, the two grew close. After more than a decade together, they tied the knot in 1997, sealing their commitment to one another.
Mirren unexpectedly became the subject of viral fame in 2008 when a beach photo taken by her husband made waves online. During a romantic getaway in Italy, the couple hiked to a secluded beach to enjoy the scenery in peace. Mirren took a snapshot of Hackford, and he returned the favor.
As she posed in a red bikini, she noticed a flash in the distance and quickly ducked behind the rocks, suspecting paparazzi. Hackford dismissed her concerns as “paranoia,” but soon after, a tabloid published the photo—and it spread like wildfire.
Years later, Mirren addressed the now-iconic image on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, admitting, “I look at that picture and say, ‘God, I wish I looked like that.’ But I don’t.”
