Good Samaritan cleans up Nottingham’s statues as it ‘breaks him’ to see them dirty
A Nottingham man who has been cleaning the Brian Clough Statue for the past few years on his own accord has now turned his attention to some of the city’s other prominent landmarks.Michael Stremouch, 63, from West Bridgford, has been cleaning the statue of the legendary Nottingham Forest manager and also graves at Wilford Hill Cemetery for a number of years now as a way to keep him busy during his retirement.
Now that Remembrance Sunday is coming up, Michael has decided to dedicate his time to some of Nottingham’s statues that will be at the focal point of some Poppy Day Services.
While Michael is a die-hard Reds supporter, he was also seen cleaning the “Legends of the Land” statue outside the Notts County ground.
Michael said: “It stemmed from me doing a fundraiser for Mencap, where I collected all the signatures of the Forest players and the Notts County players on a few jerseys, so when I was down there, I saw the oak tree outside and the mess, so I cleaned it all last Saturday.
“I carried on and carried on, so I thought right tomorrow I’m going to do Brian Clough again, so I made it all good again, so then I rang my friend and he said, well, you have to do Robin Hood, so I went and did that one as well.
“I’ve got the time, I make the time, and I’ve got the tools so why not?”
Michael also previously cleaned a number of other Nottingham statues, as he believes the city needs a good clean, as he claims that more needs to be done to help the city’s appearance.
Michael explained that his hobby of cleaning statues came after working on painting a building above the Brian Clough Statue, and after seeing how dirty it was, he decided to start cleaning it all up, and even said that Simon Clough personally thanked him for the deed.
Michael continued: “I just want to do my bit to keep the city clean, the council are very poor now, it breaks me, I went to the Embankment the other day, and it breaks me that it was dirty.”
