A Mother’s Intuition: How Trusting My Instincts Changed Everything

A few weeks after finding out I was pregnant, I began experiencing light cramping and spotting. I had heard that both could be normal in early pregnancy, so at first, I tried not to panic. But as the days passed, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t quite right. It wasn’t the pain or the symptoms that alarmed me—it was a quiet, internal knowing that I couldn’t ignore.

Out of concern, I went to the emergency room. They ran a few blood tests and a basic ultrasound, and after a short while, they told me they couldn’t find any signs of a pregnancy. Their conclusion was that it might have been a very early loss—possibly what’s known as a chemical pregnancy. They were kind, but ready to send me home with reassurance that everything would be okay.

But my instincts were loud and clear: something deeper was going on.

I asked—insisted, really—to speak with my obstetrician. Thankfully, he listened. He reviewed my symptoms carefully, asked additional questions, and immediately ordered a more detailed scan.

That decision changed everything.

Within hours, the imaging revealed what the initial tests had missed: my pregnancy was ectopic. It was developing outside the uterus, in one of my fallopian tubes. This is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition if left undetected, as it can cause internal bleeding and other severe complications.

I was shocked and scared—but also deeply grateful.

Grateful that I listened to my body.
Grateful that I spoke up.
Grateful that my doctor didn’t dismiss me.

That day didn’t just save my health—it shaped my perspective. It reminded me that self-awareness is powerful, and that women need to trust their intuition, even when others don’t see what they feel. The experience wasn’t the joyful pregnancy journey I had imagined, but it became something else: a journey of awareness, courage, and resilience in the face of the unknown.

Recovery wasn’t just physical—it was emotional. I grieved the pregnancy, yes, but I also held on to the strength I had found in myself. And ever since then, I’ve made it a point to tell other women what I learned:

Listen to your body.

No one else lives in it but you.
You know its rhythms, its signals, its quiet shifts.
Sometimes, intuition isn’t “just a feeling”—
It’s the message that saves your life.
