While the policy isn’t new, it’s typically not enforced, especially at the clubs where the food court is located on the outside of the building.
But according to a sign spotted at a Costco in Orlando, Florida and shared on Reddit, beginning April 8, Costco plans to start enforcing the policy.
“Effective April 8, 2024, an active Costco membership card will be required to purchase items from our food court. You can join today. Please see our membership counter for details.”
At this time, it’s unclear if people who have a Shop Cards, a Costco gift card, will be able to make a purchase from the food court.
The crackdown comes on the heels of the retailer attempting to stop just anyone with a valid membership card from making a purchase.
In June 2023, Costco began strictly enforcing its membership policy, which states only Costco members are allowed to make purchases.
“Our membership policy states that our membership cards are not transferable and since expanding our self-service checkout, we’ve noticed that non-member shoppers have been using membership cards that do not belong to them,” read a statement released by Costco. “We don’t feel it’s right that non-members receive the same benefits and pricing as our members.”
