Everything is finished with melted chocolate, a sprinkle of sea salt, and optional chopped nuts for extra crunch. Easy to prepare and impressive to serve, these dessert bars are ideal for parties, holidays, or anytime you crave a decadent treat.
Ingredients
For the Base
- 2 cups crispy rice cereal
- 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
For the Salted Caramel
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon sea salt, plus extra for garnish
For the Topping
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- ½ cup chopped almonds or pecans (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Crunchy Base
In a large bowl, combine the crispy rice cereal, graham cracker crumbs, cocoa powder, and sugar. Stir until evenly mixed.
Step 2: Add the Butter
Pour the melted butter over the dry ingredients and mix until everything is thoroughly coated and resembles moist crumbs.
Step 3: Form the Base Layer
Line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper, leaving extra paper over the edges for easy removal later. Press the mixture firmly into the bottom of the pan to create an even layer.
Step 4: Make the Caramel
Place the sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously as it melts and gradually turns a deep golden amber color.
Helpful Tip: Keep a close eye on the sugar once it begins to melt, as it can quickly go from perfectly caramelized to burnt.
Step 5: Add the Butter
Carefully stir the cubed butter into the caramelized sugar. Continue whisking until the mixture becomes smooth and fully combined.
Step 6: Finish the Caramel Sauce
Slowly pour in the heavy cream while whisking constantly. The mixture will bubble vigorously at first. Once smooth, stir in the sea salt and remove from the heat.
Step 7: Layer the Caramel
Pour the warm caramel over the prepared base and spread it evenly. Allow it to cool for 10–15 minutes before adding the next layer.
Step 8: Melt the Chocolate
Place the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in short intervals, stirring between each one, until completely melted and smooth.
Step 9: Add the Topping
Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the caramel layer. If desired, sprinkle chopped nuts over the chocolate while it is still soft. Finish with a light sprinkle of sea salt.
Step 10: Chill
Refrigerate the dessert for at least 1 hour, or until the chocolate is firm and the caramel has set.
Step 11: Slice and Serve
Lift the chilled dessert from the pan using the parchment paper overhang. Transfer to a cutting board and cut into squares or bars. Serve cold for the best texture.
Serving Suggestion
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The bars stay firm, flavorful, and ready to enjoy whenever a sweet craving strikes.
