Homemade White Bread
For the Bread:
- All-purpose flour – 4 cups
- Instant yeast – 2 teaspoons
- Salt – 2 teaspoons
- Sugar – 2 tablespoons
- Unsalted butter, softened – 2 tablespoons
- Warm water – 1 1/2 cups
For the Topping (optional):
- Milk – 1 tablespoon
- Unsalted butter, melted – 1 tablespoon
Instructions:
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Step 2: Prepare the Dough
In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, softened butter, and the yeast mixture. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Step 3: First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1–2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Step 4: Shape the Loaf
Punch down the dough to release the air, shape it into a loaf, and transfer it to a greased bread pan.
Step 5: Second Rise
Cover the loaf and let it rise again for 30–45 minutes.
Step 6: Preheat Oven & Prepare Topping
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). If using the topping, mix together the milk and melted butter.
Step 7: Bake
Brush the loaf with the optional topping. Bake for 30–35 minutes, until the crust is golden and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.
Step 8: Cool & Serve
Allow the bread to cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy!
